Saved cards and autopay

Let customers save a card for faster payments, charge a saved card from an invoice, and get paid automatically with autopay.

Turn on saved cards

Saved cards need card payments to be on. The card is kept by Stripe on your own Stripe account. Relay only keeps the brand, the last four digits and the expiry date.

  1. Step 1: Go to Settings, Card payments.
  2. Step 2: Under Saved cards and autopay, tick Let customers save a card and tap Save saved card settings.
  3. Step 3: Leave Retry a failed autopay once on to try a declined card one more time three days later.

How customers save a card

  1. Step 1: On an invoice link, they tick Save this card for future payments before they pay.
  2. Step 2: In their customer portal, under Payment methods, they tap Add a card. They can also remove a card or pick the default one.
  3. Step 3: Or open the customer, find Payment methods and tap Email a save-card link. Use Get a link to share to text it yourself.
  • Tip: If you accept US bank payments, customers can save a bank account the same way.

Autopay

Only the customer can agree to autopay: in their portal, or with the box on a save-card link. Their consent and its date show on the customer record. After that you can turn autopay off and on again. If the customer turns it off, you cannot turn it back on until they agree again.

With autopay on, every invoice you send is charged to their default card, never more than the balance. Repeating invoices and memberships can have autopay on their own; those are charged when each invoice is made.

The customer gets an email receipt. The invoice is marked paid and you get the usual payment email.

When a charge fails

The invoice shows Autopay failed with the reason. The customer is emailed a link to pay another way, and owners and managers get a notification and an email.

With retries on, Relay tries once more three days later. Never more than once.

Charge a saved card yourself

  1. Step 1: Open the invoice. Owners and managers see Saved card with Charge saved card.
  2. Step 2: Check the amount, which is always the balance due, and the card, then tap Charge.
  • Tip: See Quotes and invoices, Invoices, Autopay for upcoming charges, failures and what autopay collected.
